How to Attach the Handle
1. Handle Selection: A suitable handle for a sledgehammer should typically be made of hardwood (e.g., beech, oak) or composite fiber material.
The end of the handle should fit snugly into the sledgehammer head, with no gaps.
2. Attachment Process: The end of the handle is sanded and shaped to easily fit into the sledgehammer head.
The head is placed onto the handle and carefully secured with a hammer.
After securing, a wooden wedge or metal shim is inserted into the top of the handle to expand it.
This expansion ensures the handle is tightly wedged inside the head and prevents it from coming off.
Finally, epoxy adhesive can be applied between the handle and the head for extra security.
3. Inspection: If the sledgehammer head wobbles on the handle after attachment, the process should be repeated.
A perfect fit between the handle and head is critical for safe use.
Recommendations for Healthy and Safe Use
Use of protective equipment: Work should be done with safety glasses, gloves, and steel-toe boots.
Flat surface and stable stance: When using a sledgehammer, slippery surfaces should be avoided, and a balanced stance should be maintained.
Handle inspection: Before each use, check if the handle has loosened.
Striking direction and force: The striking direction of the sledgehammer should be clear and used in a way that does not damage surrounding objects.
Rest breaks: During prolonged use, breaks should be taken for hand and wrist health.
